Use protective mats, and make sure they are large enough and absorbvent to collect dirt before tracking to your flooring.

Properly maintain your floor. Know what finish or fabric you have and follow manufacturers recommendations. Proper maintenance can extend the life of your flooring, while improper products or procedures can void the warranty and damage your flooring. Leaving shampoo on carpets or cleaning residues on hard surface floors can attract and hold dirt.

Do not throw it away! Left over scraps can be a nuisance, but are good for color matching when decorating and would be useful for repairing those burned, torn or bleached areas.
